Thank you to the thousands of Newcastle residents who supported me on Thursday 6th May and to my incredible campaign team who worked to achieve an historic result. I am sorry I didn't succeed in my bid to become your Member of Parliament and the first Conservative MP for Newcastle-under-Lyme in over 100 years. Nonetheless, we achieved a result to be proud of: the Conservatives' strongest result in Newcastle since before the Second World War, even surpassing Nicholas Winterton's famously narrow defeat in the 1969 by-election. We reduced a Labour majority of 8,100 (25%) to just 1,500 (3%), achieved a swing of 8.6% (almost twice the national average) and increased the Conservative vote by 50%. Newcastle, taken for granted by the Labour Party for generations, is now the 18th most marginal constituency in the UK and the seat that would deliver David Cameron a majority in the House of Commons at the next General Election. The Newcastle Conservative Association, supported by our neighbouring Conservative Associations mounted the strongest General Election campaign we've seen for decades. I'm tremendously grateful to the small, but determined team who worked with me over almost two years. My wife and I enjoyed every moment of it and feel lucky for the many friends we've made in the process. We fought a strong, positive campaign and set out to address the serious challenges facing North Staffordshire, particularly unemployment, the lack of skilled jobs and for the new enterprise and investment the region deserves. I'll continue to work on these issues, so please stay in contact. Best wishes, Robert Jenrick ELECTION RESULT 2010
