Safety on the A1 around Newark

We have got to improve the A1 around Newark to ensure lives aren’t needlessly lost or people injured in the pile-ups which have become all too frequent and the roots of which are invariably the short slip roads and inadequate safety measures. I’ve met so many residents who worry about their loved ones who use the road daily and whose heart misses a beat each time they hear on the news of another accident. I’ve gathered our local MPs of all parties and been supported by the Police Commissioners for Notts and Lincs. We are united in our call on Highways England to take urgent steps, as well as bringing forward the new Newark Northern By-pass which will entail improvements to the Winthorpe roundabout and A1 slip-roads. I’m meeting the Head of Highways England in May in Newark and have invited residents who have organised a petition to come and explain how strongly people feel. I’ve met the Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling and he is reviewing the data and options for the road.
